Beethoven Bicentennial Collection: String Quartets, Vol. VII. Deutsche Grammophon Gesselschaft
Incredible deal for the price. Grammophon records have sterling quality to them, especially compared to the standard used classical records you can purchase at shops. I had some initial concerns when I ordered because it was unclear what quartets came in the collection, but the collection comes with all the late Beethoven quartets (14th, 15th, 16th), the Grosse Fuge, alongside two early quartets from Op. 18 (No. 1 in F Major and No. 2 in G Major) and three from the middle period (No. 2 in E Minor and No. 3 in C Major from the Op. 59 or the "Rasumovsky" and the F Minor Quartet, Op. 95, the "Serioso") performed here by the Amadeus Quartet. The copy was in excellent condition--both the records and the box set itself. The insert was also helpful, as it not only came with the usual notes about the history of the quartets (by Christopher Breunig) but also a photocopy of the original edition of the "grosse Fuge" and its title page (from Wilhelm Bopp, referring to the "Grand Fugue.") This is one of the best record purchases I've made and would recommend it to any serious classical listener--Beethoven's late quartets are among his finest works and as many critics have noted over the years, helped paved the path for the Romantic period that would follow.
