Product Description

This EMG addition differs in that it uses Alnico V magnets instead of the ceramic magnets of the original J. Because the JA utilizes Alnico V magnets coupled with short, squat coils, the tone is endowed with openness and warmth for a more vintage tone, all with less noise and more signal. The X series provide increased headroom giving the voicing an organic and open tone while still maintaining the clarity and response that EMG s are renowned for. X s are best described as bridging the gap between passive and active tone.

I put these EMG JAX pickups onto a Squire Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz bass with an 18V (2 X 9V battery) power supply. I had to buy about $40 to $50 worth of tools and templates (and use a borrowed router) to route the hole for the 18V battery container from Stew mac. Routing out the cavity for the battery container is not a task for the faint-hearted. I would only advise it, if you are a semi competent woodworker and have lots of scrap wood to practice on.I started out using these pickups with La Bella Deep Talking Bass flatwounds. --It sounded fairly nice. But when I put Rotosound Swing Bass roundwound strings on --These pickups really came to life!I would describe the output of these active pickups as being not quite as "hot" as the output of my Yamaha BB614 active bass's stock ceramic pickups. The Alnico V magnets are noticeably clarify the harmonics and overtones. They have less "Punch" than a ceramic magnet but far more depth in their tonal character. The stock volume and tone controls that come with this pickup are a good fit for a Jazz bass control cavity cover. They sound reasonably good. I eventually bought the EMG BTC tone control to help add more low end to the overall sound.I would say that these pickups are really the best for players who use roundwound strings because of their tonal character and depth.
