Package includes a deluxe Gig Bag and Extra String SetOur Balalaika Prima has the traditional 3 strings and measures approximately 27 inches in length. The scale length is 430 mm. The body has the classical triangular shape. The back is slightly bowed and made with alternating staves with two tones of walnut and lacewood. The darker back contrasts with the light colored wood of the soundboard. Includes a nylon gig bag.The Balalaika strings are tuned above middle C to: A, E, E (1st-3rd). The 1st string is the thinnest, and lays over more frets than the 2nd and 3rd strings. Use a piano or electronic tuner as a reference for tuning. The tension on each tuning peg can be adjusted by tightening or loosing the screw on the top of the peg. To play, the left hand notes the strings while the index finger of the right hand strums high on the soundboard near the neck. The walnut on the soundboard is decorative but also protects the soundboard from the strumming.SPECIAL NOTE ON STRINGS: There is no warranty on strings. Manufacturers recommend that you change the strings on your instrument as soon as you receive it. It occasionally happens that a string will fail during that final leg of the journey. Therefore, it is recommended that you purchase a replacement set of strings and consider changing your strings soon after it arrives.Features: Package includes a Deluxe Gig Bag and Extra String SetMade w/ Solid Walnut & LacewoodScale length: 16.92" (430 mm)Nylon Gig Bag IncludedShip weight: 26 lbsItem weight: 1.25 lbsShipped insuredBrand new

Lets start with the good:The bag is sturdy and nice. The strings that came on it were fine and the bridge was properly placed. The overall construction is really good for an instrument of this price. The are only minor seams or defects. The Tone and volume are very good. The bad:The tuners are very low quality and not of the traditional design, so replacing/uprgrading them may be difficult. The pickguard/scratch plate is situated well shallow of the fret board and glued directly onto the face of the instrument. This is not how balalaika are made, as the plate should be flush with the finger board so that the tremello that is so iconic with the regional folk music can be easily played. It is a shame about the plate being directly glued on the face, as it undoubtedly lessons the tonal quality. On my instrument I had to craft a plate to install above the stock one, which worked but given the cost of the instrument compared and the fact the one can be purchase for the same amount directly from a russain maker, I can't really recommend it for the beginners this is targeted towards. It is a shame because otherwise the instrument is wonderful.
