Product Description

Schumann imbues his string quartets with an expressive aspect which is found nowhere else in his output, revealing his secret garden as well as what might be the calmer part of his inner self. They also bear the double stamp of overflow and restraint, and are without doubt one of the most highly developed examples of symbiosis between the expressive needs of romanticism and the formal demands of writing for sixteen strings. Performed here by the Ysayƫ Quartet, these gems of the Romantic era shine in all their glory.

While the Zehetmair recording deserves all the accolades for a brilliant performance of the first and third Schumann quartets, this disc by the outstanding Ysaye Quartet of all three Schumann string quartets is equally brilliant. The principal difference, to my ears, is that the Ysaye receive slightly better sonics and their interpretation focuses the listener more on the structural relationships between the four voices whereas the Zehetmair seem to be producing a slightly more homogenous sound and thus, possibly, a slightly more romantic view. The Ysaye may take you more deeply into the inner guts of the work and, in turn, produce a slightly more gutsy sound -- although still very beautiful. I wouldn't want to be without either recording; but, if you want all three quartets, the Ysaye will give great pleasure.
